Port Isaac - North Cornwall

Days Out in North Devon and Cornwall

Heading south along the Cornish coast from Bude brings you to the picturesque villages of Boscastle, Tintagel – known for its stunningly situated ruined castle, managed by English Heritage – and Port Isaac, familiar to fans of the TV series Doc Martin and home of shanty singers Fisherman’s Friends. Farther along the coast is Padstow, where restaurants owned by celebrity chef Rick Stein serve expertly prepared seafood. Turning inland to the east, you’ll come to Bodmin Moor. This is Cornwall at its most remote and mysterious, steeped in history from ancient standing stones to smugglers’ hideouts.

Tintagel Castle

Or head north into Devon, to enjoy spectacular views from Hartland Point and visit historic Hartland Abbey and gardens. Continuing along the coastal route brings you to much-photographed Clovelly, a car-free fishing village perched on a cliff side; the characterful riverside town of Bideford; and the pretty villages of Appledore and Instow, which face each other at the point where the rivers Taw and Torridge meet.

Clovelly

Full of vibrant colour whatever the season, the magnificent gardens of RHS Rosemoor are located on the banks of the Torridge close to charming Great Torrington, with its traditional pannier market, award-winning arts centre and independent shops.
